Gilsland and Greenhead's location, at the centre of Britain, gives you unique opportunities to explore many of the North's cities and towns, beautiful scenic areas and visitor attractions. Listed below are just a few of the places you may like to visit.

Talkin Tarn Country Park
Country park with boats, woodland walks and a café.
Located south of Brampton village, the journey takes about 20 minutes.

Carlisle
Carlisle has all the usual attractions available in a city. Also, you can visit Carlisle cathedral, Carlisle castle, Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery (great for adults and children to learn more about the Roman occupation, Hadrian's Wall, the Celts, England's Civil War, the Border Reivers, middle ages and Edwardian railways), Sands Leisure Centre, covered markets and parks.
Located west along the A69 from Gilsland and Greenhead, the journey takes about 35 minutes.

Dumfries and the Solway Coast
Explore the beautiful countryside around Dumfries and the Solway.
Located north west of Gilsland and Greenhead, about an hour's drive.

Penrith, Ullswater and the Northern Lakes
Discover the picturesque and attractive countryside around Penrith, Ullswater and the Northern Lakes.
Located south west of Gilsland, follow the A69 and M6. About an hour's drive.

Alston's small gauge railway

Alston
The highest market town in England, above a lovely valley, with walks, art galleries, the South Tyne small gauge railway, Cross Fell and much more to do.
Located south of Gilsland and Greenhead, the journey takes about 35 minutes by car.

Nenthead
Wilderness scenery of the Northern Pennines and a Lead Mining Museum.
Located east of Alston, the journey takes about 50 minutes by car.

The Eden Valley
With Hartside Pass, charming villages, Appleby Horse Fair, artists' studios, open farm, and numerous other tourist attractions to explore and enjoy.
Located south of Gilsland, the journey takes about an hour by car.

Killhope Lead Mining Museum
Winner of Museum of the Year, with a restored wheel, excellent facilities, great for children.
Located east of Alston, about an hour's drive if you haven't stopped on the way.

Allenbanks
National Trust riverside woodlands with glorious walks, toilets and picnic tables. An excellent place for a relaxing picnic.
Located east of Gilsland along the A69, the journey takes about 20 minutes.

Haltwhistle
A small town with a leisure centre and open air swimming pools, shops, river walks, cycle hire and guided walks.
Located south of Gilsland, only 5 minutes drive away.

Hexham
A picturesque market town with indoor swimming pool, Wentworth Leisure Centre, monthly farmers' market, Hexham Abbey - once the seat of Wilfred, Queens Hall art centre and Border History museum.
Located east of Gilsland along the A69, the journey takes about 30 minutes.

Corbridge
A charming small town on the banks of the Tyne, with interesting shops and a large car boot sale weekly.
Located east of Gilsland along the A69, the journey takes about 35 minutes.

Bardon Mill
Scenic village with a pottery.
Located 10 minutes drive from Gilsland.

Newcastle/Gateshead
Excellent shopping and city facilities, theatres, Tyne bridges, the Sage music centre and many more attractions.
Located east of Gilsland along the A69, the journey takes about 1 hour.

Wallington Hall and Grounds
A National Trust property with historic house, extensive grounds and gardens. Children love it.
Located north east of Gilsland, the journey takes about 45 minutes.

Kirkharle Craft shop and café
Choose from the range of crafts then enjoy a cup of tea or coffee and the excellent home-baked goods.

Rothbury and Cragside
Visit the attractive village of Rothbury and then explore Cragside, the home of Lord Armstrong. This National Trust property has a superb historic house, grounds, gardens, play area, walks and lakes. The house is famous for being the first house to be lit by electricity in the world.
Located north east of Gilsland, the journey takes about an hour.

Chesters Walled Garden
This garden contains the national herb collection, Roman fort excavations and a museum.
Located east of Gilsland along the Military Road, the journey takes about 20 minutes.

North Tyne Villages of Simonburn, Bellingham and Otterburn
Varied and beautiful countryside, visit Simonburn church, Bellingham heritage centre, and Otterburn mill shop.
Located east of Gilsland along the Military Road, then travel north, the journey takes up to an hour.

Kielder Water and Kielder Forest
For boats, water sports, art installations, maze, castle and many other attractions.
Located north of Bellingham, the journey takes about an hour from Gilsland, if you're not distracted along the way.

Scottish Border Villages of Newcastleton, Canonbie, Langholm and Gretna Green
Lovely places to visit.
Located north west of Gilsland, the journey takes about an hour.
