Lanercost Priory
The Augustinian Priory of Lanercost was founded around 1166 by Robert de Vaux, and is built mostly from stone recycled from
Hadrian's Wall.
Visit the book and gift shop, attend the regular Sunday service in the Parish Church and explore the Priory.
The Priory is open daily from April to the end of September. Times may vary.

Quaker Chapel, Coanwood
This 18th Century chapel stands in a remote upland valley, on the road to Whitfield. Of the many 18th century
Meeting Houses which survive in Northumberland, only Coanwood has been spared major alteration since its construction
in 1760. Look for the date carved on the lintel above the entrance.
Now closed, it is looked after by the Historic Churches Trust and access is available by telephoning 01434320256.
St. Cuthbert's Church, Greenhead
John Dobson designed the church in 1826, and the spire and chancel were added 100 years ago. The east window was designed by
Burne-Jones.

St. Cuthbert's Church, Nether Denton
Built on the site of a Roman fort, the church pre-dates Hadrian and you can see a Roman altar stone outside the main entrance.
Sunday Service starts at 9:30am
The church is closed until September 23 2006 for essential roof repairs.

St. Mary Magdalen
Gilsland's Parish Church, consecrated on October 3, 1854, was built by George Gill Mounsey of Carlisle. A typical
Victorian church, it has the head of Queen Victoria as one of the corbels supporting the arch of the doorway.

Upper Denton
Inside this tiny church at Upper Denton you will find a fine Roman arch and Roman stones. This Anglo-Saxon church was built in 826
using a lot of Roman stones from Nether Denton Fort. A key is available from the house opposite. This church is well worth a visit.
